“We’ve crunched the data across 28 categories and can reveal – once and for all – which is the best island in the Mediterranean” starts the article on The Telegraph.

Telegraph Travel writer, Gregg Dickinson, describes the idyllic  Mediterranean islands as some of the best in the world. “But which one strikes a perfect balance of beaches, fine dining, sultry weather and luxurious offerings?”

They shortlisted 50 out of 10,000 islands. They crunched data across 28 categories in four main areas: History and Culture, Natural Wonders, Weather, and Luxuries.

PADI diving spots, ancient ruins, museums, 5-star hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants competed with the nuances of weather to make for the perfect holiday.

Malta, Gozo and Comino were considered as one since they are one country. The sea and sun add to the rich extraordinary history to create beautiful sights.

“Its three World Heritage Sites (City of Valletta, the Megalithic Temples and the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum) ancient Xaghra stone circle and – believe it or not – fine wine according to Decanter (Gran Cavalier Sauvignon Blanc), leave it in second place out of the 50 islands for History and Culture.”

“Throw in six Michelin-starred restaurants and 75 recognised dive sites, and Malta emerges as the fifth finest Mediterranean island in our study.”

As a highlight of the holiday, the article pointed towards The Ħal-Saflieni Hypogeum where you can experience the world of the “temple people” who lived here over 5,000 years ago. It describes the temples as a three-storey labyrinth hewn into solid rock.

The ultimate hotel chosen is The Phoenicia Hotel:

“Malta’s iconic Art Deco hotel, the Phoenicia is perfectly located beside the main gates of the citadel capital, Valletta. A favourite of the British Royal family, it is a destination in itself, as well as a five-star hotel with character and all the facilities – including gardens, pools indoor and out, and a spa.”

Do you agree that Malta is one of the finest islands in the Med?
