Maltese Family Casually Bump Into John Oliver In Central Park
Imagine going for a nice walk in a park and running into one of your favourite comedians. That’s exactly what happened to Simon Mamo and his sons while on holiday in New York City.
After a walk in Central Park, Simon and his three sons were about to head home when they spotted popular British comedian John Oliver, host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight.
John Oliver rose to fame due to his sharp wit and detailed takedowns of some tough topics. Hugo Mamo, Simon‘s son, said that they were planing on seeing him that Saturday anyway at the charity event Night of Too Many Stars.
Speaking to Lovin Malta, Hugo explained how they ran into the comedian unexpectedly.
“We were walking through Central Park, for about an hour and half, and when we were leaving my dad was checking out the map of Central Park near one of the entrances. While waiting for him, John walks by casually,” said Hugo.
“I’m good with recognising people and I turned my face, looking at him. I was quite sure it was him, but not 100% obviously. Sam saw my head turn and stopped him by saying ‘John, John’, and then he stopped to talk to us for a bit and take a photo. He was a really nice and casual guy.”
After they had called his name, John Oliver chatted to the Maltese father and his sons, to their joy.
Jerome, Hugo’s brother, said that “he was not in a hurry to leave, he was a very normal guy. We complimented him for his wit, and he was very relaxed about the photo.”
Even though they tried not to be annoying, people started noticing the excited conversation.
“I didn’t want to be a pain in the ass because he was just going for a walk,” said Hugo. “But after we stopped him other people wanted a photo with him also.”
As excited and shocked as they all were, when they were taking the photo at the end of their meeting, Simon noticed something about his son and tried to let him know.
“My zip was down,” laughs Hugo. “My dad took the photo and he said ‘Hug, your zip is down’, we were all laughing!”
