Being the perfect weekend getaway, there are loads of things to do when you’re in Sicily. With gorgeous architecture and some sparkling blue seas, here are some Sicily fun facts you probably didn’t know.

Ranging from historical facts to artistic ones, check out the seven Sicily fun facts we bet you had no clue were true.

1. Sicily was ruled by many Empires

Just like Malta, Sicily has been governed by loads of different empires. Being ruled by the Greeks, Normans, the French and even the Spanish, Sicily’s culture is one big melting pot of unique artistic artefacts, languages, and traditions.

Everyone’s inner child will be jumping for joy when you sit down in a cafe and see all of the locals enjoying refreshing ice cream for breakfast. Loving their sweet treats, Sicilians will do anything for a good scoop of breakfast ice cream.

Being built back in 1897, Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele has stood the test of time by being the biggest opera house in Italy. Housing 1,387 guests and having a stunning typical Baroque theatre set-up, Teatro Massimo is an unmissable site.

4. They have some gorgeous Greek ruins

Back in the day, the Greeks loved Sicily so much that they considered it their home. In fact, the amount of glorious Greek ruins that are preserved in Sicily is gorgeous. With Greek ruins in Taormina and The Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, not seeing Greek artefacts is nearly impossible.

5. Sicily has coasts on 3 different seas

Even though when we think of Sicily we usually think of the Mediterranean, that’s not the only sea that Sicily touches. The northern part of the island forms part of the Tyrrhenian sea while the east coast touches the Ionian sea.

6. The sonnet was invented in Sicily

This one is for all those artistic souls. The sonnet, arguably Shakespeare’s favourite form of creation, was originally invented in Sicily. Dating back to the 13th century, it was Giacomo da Lentini who started experimenting with this 14-line poem structure.

7. Mount Etna is not the only volcano in Sicily

Everyone knows that Mount Etna is found in Sicily, but not a lot of people can name the other nine volcanoes found on the island. Even though Sicily is home to ten volcanoes, only three of them are active. This means if you want to catch a glimpse of volcano action, you need to visit Mount Etna, Stromboli or Vulcano.
