Time to plan a quick getaway – a new catamaran service is coming to Malta!

In videos and photos circulating on social media earlier today, the San Giorgio, which belongs to new company Ragusa Xpress, can be seen conducting a successful docking in the Marina di Ragusa.

This wasn’t the last test run of the catamaran, with Sicilian media Ragusa Oggi this afternoon quoting port authority sources that the only hurdles might come in the form of the strong winds and rain which are predicted to continue hitting the region.

Able to carry up to 400 passengers and 18 vehicles, the HSC San Giorgio catamaran – which has now been renamed the Ragusa Xpress – was built back in 2001.

Already linked by daily catamaran to Pozzallo, Malta will now have another connection to Sicily beyond the long-established Virtu’ Ferries… something which definitely came as a welcome news after Ponte Ferries had suspended its service back in October 2023.

Set to be officially launched soon, the Ragusa Xpress comes after a Maltese group of investors took over ownership of the marina and the port area. The group is led by PAMA and PAVI boss Paul Gauci. In fact, Gauci is reportedly also interested in developing both retail and residential units around the marina.
