WATCH: Malta’s Original Rapper Propels Himself Back Onto The Scene
For a generation of Maltese people, there are some lyrics that will be remembered forever. They have been marked into our collective unconscious, phrases that mean something, that are more than just nostalgia combined with a dope beat.
Phrases like ‘Paceville biss, Paceville spiss’ or ‘Originali bħali, għamilt CD, originali bħali, rap bil-Malti’ captured Malta’s youth in a time when Traditional Malta and Cosmopolitan Malta were clashing, and the country’s modernisation was truly underway.
It was also catchy AF, and that’s why people are getting excited that Hooligan, Malta’s OG rap artist, is planning on making a return to the Maltese rap game with a new album.
Hints of a new rap album from the Hooli had been popping up recently, most especially when he began to take part in the hardcore Botta U Rispota rap battles as well as his recent collaborations with next-generation Maltese rap group Kapitlu Tlettax, showing that he still has the chops.
He also used his rap talents to speak out against racism in the ‘Raise Your Voice’ event held in Valletta earlier this year.
Fans might have been thrown off the scent when Hooligan unveiled his new show: a travel show on ONE, hosted by Master Hooli himself.
Shown every Sunday evening, Roadway TV features Hooligan travelling with a sidekick bringing some local Maltese humour to travel shows, without any challenges a la’ Liquorish, and with actual beautiful shots of the countries he visits like Croatia, Germany, Bosnia and Italy.
However, with the teaser video from upcoming single “Mument tas-Skiet” that Hooli recently posted, it seems like we could be getting the Christmas present we were all hoping for – a new Hooligan album.
