A Maltese travel vlogger ended up in a dangerous situation after he found himself in the middle of a Hong Kong riot yesterday.

Lawrence Attard came under fire from tear gas and other debris as police attempted to retaliate against ongoing protesters on Nathan Road.

The vlogger, who regularly posts his travels on his YouTube channel ‘Lawrence Mast’, has been documenting small-scale protests in Hong Kong over the past few days but yesterday was close enough to be considered one of them as he came under fire from the retaliations of local police.

In the video, protesters, dressed in black and wielding umbrellas as shields, can be seen advancing towards local police whilst throwing planks and bricks at them, amongst other things.

At a moment’s notice, police retaliated by firing tear gas into the crowd, causing protesters to flee, including Lawrence himself, who can be heard coughing as a result of the gas.

“They’re shooting, they’re shooting tear gas.”

Following the chaos, Lawrence uploaded another vlog to his channel, highlighting the aftermath of the protest.

“As you can see behind me, on both sides of the road, it’s full of bricks… The destruction I have seen today has spread on other streets, not just Nathan Road.”

The 2019 Hong Kong protests, also known as the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill movement, are an ongoing series of demonstrations in Hong Kong which were triggered by the introduction of the Fugitive Offenders amendment bill by the Hong Kong government last June.

While there has been ample media coverage of the protests, there’s nothing like a man with a Maltese accent giving his take on the events, albeit being way too close to the action.
