Michelle Zammit must be one of the most-travelled Maltese people around.

The co-founder of the Cheeky Passports travel site has visited 109 countries so far, including rare destinations like Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Turkmenistan, Venezuela and Timor-Leste, and she’s certainly not done yet.

I recently sat down with Michelle for a quick Q&A about her travels and this is what I found out about her.

Favourite destinations: Indonesia for its remote beaches and tribal communities, and Iran for its beautiful architecture and natural landscape.

Most underrated destination: North-East India, “a very pristine place where not many foreigners visit”

Strangest food she has tried: Balut (the famous semi-fertilised egg), camel, dog, snake.

Wildest experience: Getting tattooed by a then-101-year-old Whang-Od, the legendary Filipino “batok” tattoo artist who has been described as the oldest tattoo artist in the world.

Most surreal experience: Visiting the ex-headhunting Indian village of Longwa, whose people were later converted to Christianity by missionaries and who regularly smoke opium.

How long-term travel has changed her: Gaining a perspective of her own fortunate position and understanding that life choices are a privilege that many people around the world don’t enjoy.

Besides travelling the world solo and with her partner Nikki, Michelle is also currently organising group trips through the GlobalTravelBook platform, with trips to Uzbekistan, Colombia, Mongolia and Tanzania all confirmed for the coming 12 months.
