Schools all around the nation restarted this week, with thousands of students returning to class. But as Malta’s roads already fill up with traffic, Transport Malta’s CEO has appealed for caution while driving… and for drivers to give priority to school transport.

In a video uploaded to Transport Malta’s social media accounts yesterday evening, CEO Jonathan Borg said it’s important for all drivers to exercise caution and to be attentive while driving especially during the early hours in the morning when most people are driving to work or to school.

Borg encouraged the public to prioritise school transport when it is feasible and appealed to everyone to consider using the roads during off-peak hours to show respect to all road users and to further promote safety.

School transport was made free of charge five years ago to reduce the number of vehicles in the streets with the aim to reduce congestion.

This statement comes ahead of a public consultation which will be held regarding traffic so that Transport Malta will be able to tackle road congestion and find the necessary solutions in the coming weeks.

Borg, who was previously the Yachting Malta Chairman, took up the head role at Transport Malta on 1st May 2023
