New Maltese MEP Cyrus Engerer To Appear On Lovin Daily Today
Cyrus Engerer will be appearing on Lovin Daily this morning, a day after he was elected to the European Parliament.
You can watch the live interview at 10am on Lovin Malta’s Facebook page.
Engerer was elected as an MEP yesterday during a casual election for the seat vacated by Miriam Dalli, who left Brussels after six years to enter the Maltese Parliament.
A former PN deputy mayor, Engerer switched to the Labour Party amidst the 2011 divorce referendum, in which he was a main campaigner in favour of legalising divorce.
He was one of the favourites to get elected as an MEP in the 2014 European Election. However, he stepped aside after he was handed a suspended sentence in a revenge porn case.
Engerer was appointed as former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s special envoy in Brussels, stepping down in May 2018 and contesting the European Parliament election a year later, narrowly failing to get elected.
He is renowned as a civil liberties campaigner and last year became the first major Maltese politician to publicly call for the legalisation of cannabis for personal use.
After Yorgen Fenech was arrested last year for the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, Engerer publicly called for the resignation of then Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.
In his first comments since his election, Engerer pledged to prioritise civil liberties and the environment and said MEPs from both parties must be united at a European level.
