Watch: The Big Swim That Started It All – Relive Neil Agius’ 2020 Challenge From Sicily To Malta
Before this weekend’s insane three-day swim around the Maltese Archipelago, before he took on an endless carpet of jellyfish in the middle of night between Mallorca and Ibiza, before he swam from Linosa to Xlendi… Neil Agius took on a 33-hour swim from Sicily to Malta.
By the end of what was then his biggest challenge to date, Neil not only managed to complete the swim, but actually arrived back home well ahead of schedule, smashing all previous records and establishing himself as the swimming superhero Malta and beyond would come to know and love.
On that day on 25th June 2020, and in the weeks leading up to it, Lovin Malta joined Neil and his team on the incredible journey.
And above everything, we were there when he swam back, for what literally ended up being The Long Swim Home.
From jellyfish proving (even then) to be his biggest challenge to his mother Debbie opening up about what a young Neil was like when it came to swimming lessons, The Long Swim Home is an intimate look into the former Olympian’s brain, heart and soul.
And whether it’s his relationship with his partner Lara or their reverence of the water deity Lemanja, Neil bore it all… and you could already see the mentality of champion and a proper world-class achiever.
So as we look back on this weekend’s superhuman feat, let’s remember one thing about Neil: he’s always had it in him, and that’s exactly why we always believed he could do this!
