WATCH: 91-Year-Old Maltese Poet Visits Hospital To Cheer People Up Every Day

Ġorġ Agius may be known as l-Għannej tal-Mużew but he’s so much more than a simple folk singer, he’s a light to scores of people in hospital, every single day.

In a recent interview with Fejn Għexna, the 91-year-old from Birgu explains how he goes to hospital every day to cheer up those who are stuck there and help relieve a little bit of their pain with his words.

“People come up to me and say: George, tell us one of your rhymes so we’ll feel a little bit better” he explains as he bursts into one of his favourite rhymes/ His words are always a positive inspiration, telling those he’s with to keep a positive outlook, because whining and complaining will only make it worse.

Ġorġ says his biggest inspiration was listing to San Ġorġ Preca preach about the word of God while he was still a very young boy. “His words moved me so much I just carried on with this life”.

But what’s the secret to knowing exactly what to say? Ġorġ says it’s all down to a simple prayer he says every morning. “Jesus, when I wake up in the morning – use my mouth to speak your words*”

*The original Maltese phrase is another rhyme
