WATCH: Malta Is Getting An Intense Ghost Film In 2018 And The Teaser Will Unsettle You

Sometimes, a very quick teaser is enough to whet your appetite for what’s to come. That’s exactly what happened last night with the release of a short clip for a new Maltese feature-length film, Hemm Dar Il-Qala.

Not much has been revealed about the film’s plot, except that it follows the unfortunate life of Emily Edevane. 40 years after she was abandoned by her husband, Emily (who has been left alone to raise her three young children) starts  experiencing “remnants of what happened” along the decaying walls of the house, Edevane Mansion.

The 23-second teaser doesn’t show much, but it’s enough to unsettle any unsuspecting viewer. It’s got all the elements you’d expect, up to a young boy calmly saying, “Il-mama’ kienet tgħid li aħna mislufin minn Alla.” Eesh, anyone else getting heebie-jeebies?

The film is the latest project by Mark Doneo, who had debuted his feature film Silhouette back in 2013.

“The film has been two years in the making, so we’re reasonable excited and eager to premiere it,” Doneo told Lovin Malta. “It’s also a very rare 16+ local feature. There isn’t any gore or anything like that, but it’s a very grounded psychological ghost story. This is not a horror film.”

The film is entirely in the Maltese language, but is being marketed in its original working title, The Weeping House of Qala. “We plan on floating the movie into international festivals,” Doneo said, “but we owe the cast, crew, sponsored and general interested public a screening before we launch it commercially later this year.”

With such a big focus being put on the Maltese aspect of the narrative, it might come across as weird that the woman in question is called Emily Edevane. “Our mystery lady is Gozitan, but she married a British gentleman during the war,” Doneo told Lovin Malta. “That’s where the surname comes from, and while it has a nice ring to it, it’s never particularly mentioned in the film anyway.”

The film will premiere exclusively at the Eden Cinemas for one night only on the 23rd of February.

When asked on whether more information will be landing before that day, Doneo said a longer trailer will be released “very, very soon”. In the meantime, stay tuned on more information about the chilling thriller on the film’s official Facebook page
