Emotional X Factor auditions have become quite commonplace on the Sunday night show, but one Maltese rapper’s tribute to his late mother managed to rise above and hit the national audience in the feels.

Dwayne’s rap won him four yeses, making him the latest addition to Bootcamp. But beyond his original song and his spot-on articulation, Dwayne always won people over with his truly heartbreaking story.

After losing his mother to a brain tumour in 2010, Dwayne, a 27-year-old LSE, still holds her memory very dear

After a prompt from Ira asking who the most important person in his life is, he opens up about the loss of one of his closest family members.

Dwayne always carries his mother close to his heart, with a pendant of her photo on a chain around his neck at all times, his audition was dedicated to her honour.

The aspiring rapper opens up about the struggles of losing his mother, admitting that when Mother’s Day would come around after her passing he would find it hard not having anyone to wish well on the day.

Dwayne even recalls one particularly heartbreaking moment when he had gone to visit his mother and she couldn’t even recognise him. “I will never forget that,” an emotional Dwayne confessed, going on to say how tough it was to arrive home and not find his mother there, ready to speak to him after a day’s work.

His song Ma’ previously went viral after friends finally convinced him to share it on Facebook, at which point Dwayne decided to take things further. After featuring on a remix of Ersa fil-Qrib by The Travellers, X Factor was a natural progression for the young man’s career.

And it sure seems to have paid off, with Dwayne’s audition racking up thousands of reactions on Facebook and winning the hearts of the nation

Visibly relieved after his audition, Dwayne got some great feedback from the moved judges, who quickly voted him through to the next phase

“That was a very honest performance,” Ira said, before carrying on to compliment him on his technical abilities as well.

“I love the energy, I love the attitude, and that’s what this is all about,” Ray followed up, sounding like he was seconds away from crying himself. “And I think it’s a beautiful gift that you’re given to be able to say those words to your mother.” Alex was similarly touched by the audition, having nothing but praise for the young man.

Urging him to do better but clearly still impressed, Howard Keith was the final yes Dwayne needed to get a perfect four out of four confirmations for the next phase, and we can’t wait to see what more bars this aspiring Maltese rapper has in store for us.
