Maltese feature-length ghost film The Weeping House of Qala is finally hitting the big screen at the Eden Cinemas on the 20th of September and trust me, you’re not going to want to be there alone.

After an exclusive one-night premiere last year, the Maltese psychological thriller is finally making its way to the cinema later this month and it’s going to be every bit creepy, awesome and scary, so be prepared.

The Weeping House of Qala revolves around Edevane Mansion, a beautiful but abandoned old house in “the sleepy town of Qala” in Gozo. In what feels like an average day in the life of many locals, a Maltese film crew catches the ferry up to the sister island.

Cheerful faces arrive at the old Gozitan mansion, but as soon as an old camcorder gets turned on and you get to watch everything from its perspective, you know things are about to go down horror-style.

The film is the latest project by Director Mark Doneo, who had debuted his feature film Silhouette back in 2013. When speaking to Lovin Malta about the upcoming premiere, Doneo noted how The Weeping House of Qala isn’t your typical horror movie.

“The film is a psychological thriller/drama, just the way we wanted it,” Doneo said. “It may not be scary for some, but as a whole, there are some scenes that are scary as shit.”

From punishment rooms to ouija boards, The Weeping House of Qala is definitely a nail-biter and will keep you on the edge of your seat.

There isn’t any gore or anything like that, but it’s a very grounded psychological ghost story,” Doneo continued. “There’s one scene in particular that I really enjoyed making which involved the ‘black room’ which is a sort of punishment room… but I don’t want to give too much away.”

The Weeping House of Qala premiers on the 20th of September at Eden Cinema’s prestigious Cinema 16. Doors will open at 8pm, with the movie starting at 9pm,  followed by a signed posters giveaway and Q&A session.

“There is nothing more satisfying than sitting down in a cinema with a group of strangers and seeing your creation come to life,” Doneo finished, smiling. “It’s daunting at first, but then there’s the thrill of seeing how the audience reacts to what you created.”

With just over two weeks to go until its premiere, it’s hard not to get excited for the big night. After all, the movie is a product of years of hard work, all of which will come together on one spooky night this September!
