WATCH: Ride Malta’s Iconic Yellow Bus Along The Old Route 62 And See Sliema, Ta’ Xbiex And Valletta In All Their 90s Glory
Footage of Malta’s iconic yellow buses filmed in 1999 has surfaced on Facebook, showing the vehicles going about their daily routes in the most nostalgia-driven clips we’ve seen in a while (and we have 2008’s Eurovision entry Vodka on repeat almost daily).
The bus route 62 that’s filmed used to cover the area from St. Julian’s through Sliema, Ta’ Xbiex, Pieta, Bombi, Floriana and Valletta.
Despite being filmed in 1999 with the quality of a camcorder, the air is visibly clearer in the footage. And you might even spot a tree here and there.
All jokes aside though, this video really hits home how much Malta has changed in such a short while.
The traditional Maltese buses were well known abroad, loved by tourists for their character and nostalgic value. With the majority of the fleet classified as antique, tourists often marvelled at the fact that these vehicles were still in operating condition up until 2011.
The last of these old Maltese buses were yellow in colour with an orange horizontal stripe and their Gozitan counterparts grey coloured with a red horizontal stripe. The vast majority of the buses started and ended their trips at the main terminus in Valletta with a few operating on circular routes.
