WATCH: Three Maltese Metal Musicians Come Together For Explosive Track Lamenting Some Of The World’s Biggest Atrocities

While it might be small compared to other countries’, Malta’s metal music scene is a strong one that refuses to die down. Often using lyrics and videos to convey strong social messages, the songs quickly end up becoming as central as the scene’s lifestyle itself. Perfectly echoing all of that, three longstanding members of Malta’s scene have come together for an impromptu project of sorts; a song all about some of the biggest atrocities happening around the world.

DiggerThings (and their aptly named song, DiggerThings), sees Mark Parlato Trigona, David Cassar Torregiani and David Depasquale tear the place down for an energetic, four-minute number.

“It was actually a very spontaneous collaboration,” Mark told Lovin Malta. The song, which carries the identical name as the project, packs a punch with its mean riff and powerful lyrics. And central to the song is an overarching theme that extends far beyond the tiny island of Malta.

“We dedicate this track to all beloved men, women, children and all living beings who have
perished and are still perishing under World Dictatorship Regimes,” the band said of their track. “Many of which, also camouflaged within ‘democracies’, in Syria and beyond, not only through abominable mass death and destruction by means of ungodly weapons, but also through the torment imposed by undignified law and government, the world over.”

Mark and David go way back. In 1994, they formed the metal band Nightwing. 24 years later, they’ve reunited, joining forces with David Depasquele, producer at SpineSplitter, one of the most popular recording studios for the Maltese metal scene. Depasquele is also a member of ClubMurder and Abysmal Torment, juggernauts of the local scene. And together, they took up this project, with a message as powerful as the song’s riff.

“There is a wonderful saying that goes “Everything translates so that Nothing changes”,
because, what ‘is’ is perfectly and audaciously mighty and abundant, as it is uninhibited by
our trivialities,” the band said. “The only lives we are ruining are our own uniquely precious ones, by imagining
that we are not one. As a result, not living, loving,
laughing, crying and dying as one! We are the seasons, we are the trees, we are the seeds that
we sow and the harvest they reap.”

The song’s launch is actually happened to coincide with the guitarist’s birthday, and that sense of community flows throughout the project. The collaborative track was composed by Torreggiani, with the lyrics being written by Trigona. And Depasquale, of course, took care of the sound engineering and production (along with adding some additional guitars, because you never really have enough of those). Splinesplitter Studio also helped with the video production, with Stacey Ann Borg helping out thanks to Red Head Designs.

“What may be in store for DiggerThings is now to be seen,” Mark told Lovin Malta, but with a debut like this, this might not be the last we’ve heard of this impromptu collaboration.
