Shocking posts of Fomm ir-Riħ were uploaded today on local Facebook group IL-KOTRA.

The beautiful Maltese bay has fallen victim of plastic waste like almost all of our beaches. The disgusting imagery is mostly shocking because when one looks at Fomm ir-Riħ at first glance, it looks like one of the cleanest bays on the island.

However, local cleanup activist Cami Appelgren stated on her post that she walked around the sea with a net in her hand and collected shocking amounts of plastic bits from the seemingly clear ocean.

“Micro-plastics have reached levels of concentration of 1.25 million fragments per km2 in the Mediterranean Sea. That is about four times higher than the one in the “plastic island” found in the North Pacific Ocean,” Cami wrote in her post.

The author of the post has urged people to take action and stop littering the seas.

“When the micro-plastics enter the food chain, the small pieces threaten a big amount of animal species as well as people,” she said.
