WATCH: Maltese Dance Group Absolutely Slays In International Competition In Switzerland
Malta’s got some really incredible dancers – and one group of them has just returned from representing the island’s talents on the international stage at the World of Dance tournament in Switzerland.
World of Dance is considered to be the epicentre of the urban dance lifestyle among many modern dancers. The largest international urban dance competition in the world, WOD celebrates the latest street and choreography trends around – and Malta’s very own Concept of Movement absolutely slayed during the competition.
“We are honoured to have been first Maltese crew ever to step on a World of Dance stage, representing Concept of Movement and Malta,” said Cheryl Lofreda, the dance group’s founder and choreographer, told Lovin Malta.
“We really had good scores,” she continued, “with the highest being 87/100 and an average score of 71. It was an amazing experience, to be rehearsing all together as a family, and we grew so much more in our dance.”

14 dancers from Malta competed in the World of Dance
The competing dancers were Cheryl Lofreda, Denise Farrugia, Thea Sapiano, Luke Mizzi, Ryan Mahlangu, Mariah Bugeja, Krista Attard, Rya Fenech, Yasmine Erkayasi, Shanaia Sammut, Jaydon Gatt, Sara Cardona, Petra Farrugia and Zeo James.
Luke Mizzi also participated in a Solo Competition Showcase and Cheryl Lofreda herself performed in a Talent Performance Showcase.
However, last minute changes still had to be made due to unforeseen circumstances.
“One of our crew members had been waiting for an ID renewal for six months, and we had to make a safe decision to change all the formations and positions in the final six days. Zeo James received his ID exactly one day before we flew to the World Of Dance. He still was there, and although he could not compete with us he showed his 100% support!” Cheryl said.
As exhilarating as the competition was, the run-up to the event was just as important for the dancers
“The process is what we enjoy the most,” said Cheryl, “to see everyone working hard together as a team and lifting each other up. Throughout the process and rehearsals we issued two online episodes for the audience and supporters to follow our road to World of Dance.”
This is not the last you’ll be hearing of Concept of Movement
“It has been a wonderful experience,” Cheryl ended, “and we really enjoyed performing our set – but this is only the beginning for us. This helped us bring more motivation to ourselves and the team. We will push harder as always to get better scores in the near future.”
