WATCH: Whatever Happened To Everyone’s Favourite Environmentalist?

Xummiemu was the name of a cartoon hedgehog with a mission. He was all about the environment, and he led by example.

Maltese kids who grew up in the 90s will remember this spiky specimen. He wasn’t the cutest of things but we loved him. Except when he came to visit us at school assemblies, dressed up in full petrifying costume.

Okay – so he was kinda scary, but that was part of his appeal. We did as Xummiemu said – don’t litter and pick up litter that other people left behind, amongst other teachings.

Some of us just can’t shake that pesky voice out of our heads, and grew up to be law abiding citizens, forever questioning “What would Xummiemu do?”

Other Xummiemians, (or Xummiemites as they prefer to be called) even go well above the law and do the dirty work that the law’s supposed to take care of itself – clearing up the rambling mess that other people left behind. Devout.

Xummiemu had a very short lived comeback in 2012 when he was seen out and about with a new look. We can’t say it suited him. The superhero costume kind of gave the game away, and the most effective part of Xummiemu being Xummiemu is that he was omnipresent. He could be anywhere, ready to tell you off.

I think it’s about time we resurrect Xummiemu from his burrowy resting place. He kept things in check. For kids anyway.

If only Xummiemu wasn’t just a sketchy drawing and was a real-life thorny monster. Maybe that will scare off the grown-up pricks from dumping their trash in the countryside.

So where’s Xummiemu now? We reckon he should make another comeback. Feels like we need him more than ever
