With The Sunny Season In Full Swing, Here Are 9 Essential Maltese Locations For Your Instagram Feed

Whether you’re a tourist or a local, it is safe to say that Malta has many picture-perfect locations that will cater to all of your Instagram needs. If you didn’t know about them before, you can thank us later. You can always upload a photo on Instagram after you’ve read the article and use #LovinMalta as your little token of appreciation.

1. Fomm ir-Riħ

There are two ways of getting to this jaw-dropping location; either by car, where you drive from Baħrija, park far away and walk all the way down to the bay, or on foot from Mġarr.

Both of these require a level of fitness which neither you or your companion may have, but if you walk from Mġarr – which by the way is safer and more enjoyable – the view is much grander and more gorgeous, so your photos are obviously going to be way nicer.

2. Portomaso yachts

We’ve all been through this before, walking across the Portomaso Marina, looking at our friend and jokingly throwing a “Ija mhux diġa għedtlu biex ma joħroġlix id-dgħajsa f’nofs Marzu?!”

Now that we’ve got the entertaining part down, maybe you want to take a photo of your imaginary boat and post it on Instagram for everyone to see?

3. Mdina views and doors

A tradition that must be followed by any tourist visiting the silent city of Mdina… or any person who has enough guts to sit in front of a random person’s door and post a photo using the good old #MdinaDoors.

Your options here are endless; if you are visiting in summer, you can always buy an ice-cream and walk up the six little steps leading up to the breathtaking view of the majority of Malta right in front of you. In winter, ice-cream is not advised, but you can still take a seat at Fontanella and enjoy the view there while taking a photo of your warm cuppa.

4. New refurbished Triton Fountain

You might not remember the Triton Fountain in the basking glory it’s enjoying now, but a couple of decade ago, it was known for something quite different than the glorious centrepiece of the European Capital of Culture.

It was a meeting point for a first date, or for a group of friends headed straight to McDonald’s / Burger King / Hastings Garden. It was filthy, and it’s waters were green and murky.

Nowadays, the newly refurbished Triton Fountain is in its prime, Instagram-worthy days. And hey, it even holds some #Nostalgia opportunities for those who remember it in from a while back.

5. Wied iż-Żurrieq

Before even going down the valley’s winding roads, on the upper area leading up to this, you will find wooden tables and benches where you can sit and take pictures of the calming and atmospheric greenery surrounding you.

Once you go down into Wied iż-Żurrieq, your scenery changes into a more bluish colour, and you can take quick snaps of the endless sea that is now in front of you. On days where you’re lucky and the wind is in your favour, you can even spot Filfla!

6. Birgu waterfront

Perhaps what is truly Instagram-worthy here is the platters and glasses of wine, more than anything else.

With so many eating establishments in such a short span of roads, it is of no wonder that Birgu Waterfront makes the cut for this list. If you’re not one for taking pictures of your food, then all you need to do is take a photo of the picturesque view in front of you.

7. Binġemma tombs

Located within the limits of Mġarr, Binġemma offers any open-air Instagram lover a little dream to come true.

The landmark that will show you the way towards the tombs is a pinnacle of Maltese Instagrammable sights – an abandoned chapel. Walk down the little pathway on the right of the chapel and voila! Tombs of all shapes and sizes; cameras ready, prepare to flash.

8. Slugs Bay

We all have our favourite secluded bay that we visit in summer to avoid crowds in more populated places. Mellieħa is well known for Għadira, but on a typical summer morning you might stumble upon thousands of people fighting for a spot in the sand and the sun.

Slugs Bay, on the other hand, is the perfect little getaway for all your swimming needs. But really, it’s the Instagram needs you’re here for, and Slugs Bay has that as well; you can get on a paddle boat and take photos of the naturally caved-in beaches which will instantly up your #Adventure game.

9. Selmun Barracks

Never have abandoned buildings been so swagged up on our tiny island.

Your biggest challenge will be thinking about how you’re going to get on top of the low abandoned buildings while someone else takes what will definitely become your next profile picture. Be careful though; most of the structures are crumbling and it can be very dangerous.

After all, this place is so unique, that even sitting on a windowsill or next to a doorway will be more than enough to make your Instagram feed look like the hottest one around.

BONUS: View from the Upper Barrakka Gardens

A cliche, sure, but an essential nonetheless.

On your typical clear and warm night, you can see fancy dinners or weddings taking place just under the Upper Barrakka Gardens. You might feel jealous of the amazing view they have, but then you’ll look up and remember you get to admire the same exact thing.

Take in the scenic Grand Harbour views, with endless options thanks to the 180+ degree view. The breakwater, the Lower Barrakka Gardens, the Memorial Bell, Rinella, the Three Cities, the towering Paola Parish Church, that one yacht that even looks huge from all the way up here… take your pick.

Tag someone who still needs to take all nine of these shots!
