Luke Chappell, 15, was eliminated at the death of a pulsating edition of X Factor Malta tonight.
Eight singers took to the stage tonight with their versions of movie songs, but it was early curtains for Kelsey Bellante and Ben Purpple who were voted out in the first round.
The remaining six singers then returned with a song of their choice, and Michaela Pace, Nicole Frendo and Petra were voted through as the top three performers, while Norbert Bondin was sent home after receiving the fewest number of votes. This left Luke Chappell, a 15-year-old singer and songwriter, to square off against rapper Owen Leuellen in a judges’ vote.
Judges Alex Alden and Howard Keith Debono opted to save Luke, while Ray Mercieca plumped for Owen, leaving the final decision in the hands of Ira Losco – who mentored both singers. Unable to choose between the two singers, Ira opted to save Owen so as to leave the final decision in the hands of the public, who voted for the rapper.
With the audience shouting “Leullen!”, a tearful Ira took to the stage to encourage Luke not to give up on his dreams.
“Luke has a big future in music, he knows how to touch your heart, and I’m so disappointed that he has to go home,” she said.
Yet Luke put his disappointment behind him to deliver a message of hope to young Maltese singers.
“I want to tell children my age and younger not to lose heart because you can do what I did too,” he said.
The final of X Factor Malta will be broadcast next Saturday and is bound to throw up a few more twists and turns.
