Returning champion, Leon Azzopardi, snatched this year’s first place in the global mental mathematics competition, SuperTmatik.

Nine-year-old Azzopardi beat over 43,000 participants that competed from schools all over the world. Not only that, this is the second consecutive year that Azzopardi has participated and won, after he bested 21,000 students in 2024.

SuperTmatik is an annual competition that tests speed, accuracy and sharp thinking of young mathematicians which includes mental mathematics exercises including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Azzopardi competed in Category Three, where participants were challenged to solve 15 mental maths questions. He completed the problems in just 32.58 seconds, securing first place a full four seconds ahead of the runner-up.

Apart from Azzopardi, there were four other students representing Malta including Jamie Bartolo Perici, Seoirse, Julia Borg and Samuel Zammit who all placed in the top ten of category three.
