28 People Arrested For Living In Malta Irregularly

28 people were arrested for living in Malta irregularly yesterday evening following coordinated inspections conducted by the police.

The inspections were carried out in public spaces, service shops and grocery shops in Ħamrun. The operation then continued in several private residences throughout the country.

28 people coming from Syria, Nepal, Mali, Ghana, Nigeria and Burkina Farso were arrested in this operation after they were found to reside in the country irregularly.

The police, together with the labour and tax authorities, are also investigating the shops in which the searches were done. They’re being investigation for abuse of labour or commerce laws.

All arrested persons will be held in a detention center until they are returned to the country of origin or in which they may reside.

The Detention Services Agency from the enforcement section of the Malta Tax and Customs Administration also assisted the police.

This coordinated work in various fields will continue in the coming days and weeks, the police statement.
