A 29-year-old Ukrainian man has tragically lost his life after experiencing difficulty while swimming in Dwejra Gozo.

The incident occurred at around 1.30pm earlier today, with police being informed that assistance was required at Dwejra Bay in the limits of San Lawrenz, Gozo.

Upon going on site, police were led to the area where the man was spotted in the sea. Members from the Civil Protection Department and Armed Forces of Malta were called on site to assist in the search.

After around three hours, the body was retrieved from the sea into the port of Mġarr, where it was confirmed that it was the same man.

Magistrate Simone Grech is leading an inquiry, while police investigations are ongoing.
