“Malta is committed to continuing its contribution so that Libya and the Mediterranean can enjoy the stability, progress, security, and peace that the citizens of this region deserve,” Camilleri said. The worst fighting in Tripoli calmed on Wednesday after a ceasefire was announced by the government.

The clashes broke out late on Monday after the major militia leader was killed. On Tuesday morning, the fighting calmed down, only to reignite overnight with major battles across the entire city.Monday’s clashes had appeared to consolidate the power of Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah, prime minister of the divided country’s Government of National Unity (GNU) and an ally of Turkey. While eastern Libya has been dominated for a decade by commander Khalifa Haftar and his Libyan National Army (LNA), control in Tripoli and western Libya has been splintered among numerous armed factions.
