43.2% of children aged between 11 and 15 have admitted to sometimes worrying about how much money their family has in a recent child wellbeing report.

The University of Malta published a report in tandem with The Malta Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society entitled The Wellbeing of Children and Young People in Malta.

The report discovered that while there is general satisfaction among children about their lives, many are still concerned about their family’s income

43.2% of children between the ages of 11 and 15 reported being sometimes worried while 41.6% said that they’re never concerned. On the other hand, 15.2% claimed that they’re constantly worried about their family’s income.

Similarly, 43.6% of children between 8 and 11 years old stated that they are never worried about income while 32.8% said that they are sometimes. Interestingly, 19.5% said that they’re often or always concerned about how much money their family has.

Still, 90% of 8 to 11-year-olds are satisfied with the things they have while 86% of 11 to 15-year-olds felt the same. Among those often concerned about income, the study discovered that students attending state schools and those with a disability worry more often.

Still, the great majority of all participants indicated that they have enough food to eat daily (90.8%) while, 8.3% reported that they only sometimes have enough food to eat every day. Breaking down these numbers further, 15% of 7 to 8-year-olds did not tick ‘always’ when asked if they had enough food to eat.

Moreover, 44% of 7 to 8-year-olds occasionally worry about how much money their family has, with 12% stating they are always worried.

The study looked into a number of different factors affecting and illustrating the general well-being of children in Malta, such as screen time, body image, and general health.

One interesting statistic was that 36.2% disagreed that the area where they live is free from littering, noise, and dust.
