48-Year-Old Firefighter Joseph Zammit Dies After Putting Out Grass Fire In Pembroke

48-year-old firefighter Joseph Zammit tragically lost his life after extinguishing a grass fire in Pembroke yesterday evening. 

His death was announced by the Civil Protection Department last night.

The incident unfolded when the police received a report that a fire broke out in St. Andrew’s at around 6pm and Civil Protection Department were called to assist.

After the fire was controlled and extinguished, Zammit developed health issues and lost consciousness and was administered first aid by other members of CPD who were with him onsite and initiated CPR.

The firefighter was rushed to Mater Dei hospital where he remained in critical condition but, unfortunately, lost his life shortly after.

Joseph Zammit leaves behind his wife Kim and their two children. He was also an active member in his community and loved his village feast. 

Magistrate Dr. Victor Axiak is leading an inquiry, and police investigations are ongoing.
