60th National Photography Exhibition Opens In Valletta
The Malta Photographic Society (MPS) is celebrating a major milestone with the launch of its 60th Annual National Exhibition of Photography, held at the Malta Society of Arts in Valletta from 27th November to 19th December.
As Malta’s longest-running and largest national photographic showcase, the exhibition has become an essential fixture in the country’s cultural calendar.
Across six decades, the event has grown into a leading platform for both professional and enthusiast photographers, steadily attracting international participants and expanding its audience. This anniversary edition marks sixty years of artistic achievement, creative expression and sustained engagement within Malta’s vibrant photographic community.
Since the exhibition’s early days, the MPS has provided a crucial space for photographers to display their work, share ideas and connect with the public. Each edition has continued to broaden in artistic range, ambition and visibility, with interest from both contributors and visitors rising consistently.
For the 60th edition, the Society received 836 submissions. From these, 89 mounted and framed photographs by 39 photographers were selected for exhibition, alongside 151 digital works by 50 photographers, which will be presented through a curated on-screen display.
Reflecting on the significance of the anniversary, MPS Honorary Secretary Vince Piscopo said: “Reaching the 60th edition is both an honour and a testament to the dedication of our members, volunteers and the wider photographic community. This year’s exhibition aligns with our vision of placing the arts at the heart of Malta’s future, ensuring accessibility to cultural activity for all. By showcasing a diverse range of photographic work, we support multiple forms of artistic expression, nurture excellence and broaden public engagement with the visual arts.”
Roderick Camilleri, Acting President of the Malta Society of Arts, added: “Every year, the MPS exhibition highlights the richness and diversity of local photographic creativity. The MSA is proud to host this event, reflecting our long-standing partnership with the Society. Malta has a distinguished photographic heritage, and this exhibition continues to support the medium’s growth and evolution. It has truly become a cherished tradition in our cultural landscape.”
This 60th anniversary edition not only celebrates the depth of Malta’s photographic talent but also reinforces the shared commitment of the MPS and MSA to ensuring that the visual arts remain accessible to all. It honours a remarkable legacy while inviting the public to experience photography in new and inspiring ways.
The exhibition is open at the Malta Society of Arts, 219 Republic Street, Valletta. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 9am to 7pm, and Saturday from 9am to 1pm. Admission is free.
