63 vehicles are newly licensed each day in Malta, whether they are new or used cars, according to a study done by the National Statistics Office (NSO).

The agency released its data on motor vehicles in Malta recorded during the second quarter of 2024. It found that the stock of licensed motor vehicles has increased by a net 765 over this quarter.

The majority of newly licensed vehicles being “new” motor vehicles totals to around 59.1% with 40.9% being “used” motor vehicles.

During this quarter, a total of 9,111 motor vehicles were restricted and subsequently taken off the road. 23% of these were resold, 28.7% of these motor vehicles were garaged, and 29.2% had other restrictions. 4,462 vehicles had their restriction end during this quarter, the majority of these were garaged, making up 52.5% of the 4,462 vehicles while 46.8% were resold.

Unsurprisingly, petrol vehicles remain the majority of the motor vehicles licensed in the country. While Electric vehicles saw a 14.2% decrease in this quarter compared to the previous, however, plug-in hybrids, mild-hybrid (diesel-electric) and mild-hybrid (petrol-electric) have all seen increases of 22.2%, 8%, and 5.8%, respectively.
