75% Of Maltese Internet Users Aged 65 To 74 Consumed News Online In 2023
A whopping 75% of Maltese internet users aged 65 to 74 consumed their news through online means in 2023. This includes reading online news sites, online newspapers, and online magazines.
This data was recently published by Eurostat, which is the statistical office of the European Union, indicating that online news is continuously on the rise.
Meanwhile, on a general European level, 65% of internet users within that same age gap read news online in 2023, with the highest being Czechia at 91%, followed by Hungary and Lithuania, both at 89%.
On the other hand, the lowest rates for such usage were recorded in France, Romania, and Austria, at 50%, 53% and 57% respectively.
More data on internet usage within that age group found that 58% of internet users aged 65 to 74 years searched for health information online, 57% did their banking online, and 36% participated in social networks.
Meanwhile, in 2023, 91% of people in the EU reported that they had used the internet in the previous 3 months.
Taking a closer look, it emerged that the internet was mainly used to communicate with others, for example sending or receiving emails and instant messaging.
Across the EU, the following online activities were also very popular amongst internet users:
- 75% used it for making phone or video calls
- 70% relied on the internet to find information about goods and services
- 70% read online news site or newspapers
- 70% did online banking
- 65% participated in social networks
- 62% searched for health information online
Back to the Maltese islands, the survey found that 82% of internet users who used it in the last three months participated in social media networks, 86% sent or received emails, 92.8% used instant messaging, and 73.5% sought information related to health concerns.
