1. Go to the beach, snorkel, get a tan

If you’re unlucky enough to have been affected by a lack of electricity during the day, you’ll most likely want to get out of the house, as quickly as you possibly can. Luckily, we do live on an island, meaning the beach can’t be too far from where you live.

2. Find power: take a trip to the airport or a nearby hotel to charge your electronics

If you need to work remotely while your power’s out, your best bet is a café in a town which actually has power, a nearby hotel, or the airport if you want a variety of restaurants.

3. Find a friend with electricity and bum off their resources

If visiting hotels, cafés, or the airport isn’t really your thing, you can head to a close friend or family member who still has their power. Charge your laptop or phone, chill in the AC and enjoy the luxuries of power by bumming it.

4. Eat the food that could go bad

We all know what’s happening to all the food we keep in our fridges and freezers: it’ll go bad and we’ll have to throw it out. So why not try use it before it does? Treat yourself to a BBQ, eat some of the ice creams in the freezer, or make some charcuterie board with your hams and cheeses. Just try use your food before you’ll be forced to throw it away.

5. Seriously invest in a rechargeable fan

Living through Maltese summer takes more than a breeze to cool down, we all know that. But what if your power cuts again? No more AC to keep you cool, not even a regular fan. Disastrous. The situation can be made just a tad better with a rechargeable fan, though. Charge your fan regularly, use it while everyone else suffers through the power outage.

6. Take an impromptu road trip and use your car’s AC

f you’ve got time to kill, a short ‘road trip’ could be just the way to do it. Drive to Gozo or Sicily, go for a swim, and enjoy going round while still keeping cool through your car’s AC.

7. Go “read a book”, as Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli once told us

If you don’t have electricity and you want to find something to do, picking up a book you’ve been wanting to read might not be such a bad idea. Reading somewhere shady or somewhere else with power can keep you occupied for a while. Pro tip; if it’s night-time, use a candle.

8. Take a stroll if it’s a breezy night

If you’re lucky, you might be blessed with a breezy summer night when your power’s out. If you are, a night time stroll could kill time while also cooling you down.

9. Cool down the classic summer way: ice cream

Nothing says ‘I’ve just had my third power cut this Summer in Malta’ like indulging in a sweet cold treat. Whether you’re into Cornetto, Magnum, or a local ‘Tony’s style’ machine-made vanilla ice cream, power cuts shouldn’t prevent you from enjoying your summer dessert.
