94% Of Malta’s Population Living Satisfying Lives – But Most Of Us Don’t Believe They’ll Be Getting Better

A whopping 94% of Malta’s population is satisfied with the life they lead, according to the latest Standard Eurobarometer Survey.
This almost utopian rate of satisfaction might come as a surprise to some of us – particularly those of us stuck in traffic – but apparently, Malta is full of people living satisfying lives.
Despite this overwhelming rate of sweeping satisfaction, a report summarising the findings explained that people in Malta believe the most pressing immediate concerns are rising prices and climate change.
Although 91% of respondents described their household’s financial situation as positive, 54% said that they do not expect their lives to get better over the next year.
The survey tested the Maltese population’s perceptions of the European Union – and found that there is very little chance of ‘Mexit’ (a Maltese exit from the EU) in the near future. In fact, 76% disagreed with the statement that Malta could face a better future outside the EU.

This result is backed up by another interesting finding. Despite our apparent satisfaction, 61% of us would prefer if more decisions were taken at an EU, rather than national level.
Our apparent desire to relieve our national government of a weighty task – governance – is probably partially rooted in 54% of us not believing that Maltese media provides trustworthy information.
Even more of us – 59% – believe that information provided by local media is not free from political and commercial pressure.
The report also outlined respondents’ perspectives on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. 80% consider Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to be a threat to Malta’s security – though according to this survey, not nearly enough of a threat to dislodge our overall satisfaction.
Do you think the life you’re living in Malta is likely to become more satisfying?
