A Dark And Dangerous Christmas: Street Lights In Maltese Towns Off Through The Night

During this rainy, windy, and dark season, driving at night can prove to be quite dangerous unless street lights are keeping the roads lit.

However, that’s not the case in all Maltese localities.

Street lights in areas within Birkirkara and Sliema have been off, leaving drivers and pedestrians more vulnerable to severe road accidents.

Those in Sliema have only been off for at least a couple of days while some Birkirkara roads have been dark for weeks, according to residents.

Residents of Tower Road, Sliema, and Triq Dun Filippu Borg, Birkirkara, reached out to Lovin Malta to express their concern about this situation which they described as a “ticking time bomb”.

“What in the world is going on in Birkirkara?” one person said.

“My street has been pitch dark for weeks now, so is half of the town! Valley Road has around 5% visibility.”

“This is unacceptable and a major danger to every road user and pedestrian.”

Lovin Malta reached out to both the Sliema and Birkirkara Local Council, both of which have not responded.

When taking into consideration the devastating amount of traffic accidents that already occur on the island, it seems that these preventive measures should be given utmost priority, especially during a winter season characterised by rain, storm, and early sunsets.

UPDATE: the lights in Sliema were fixed early this morning.
