Xjenza Malta has officially joined the European Partnership on One Health Antimicrobial Resistance (EUP OHAMR), an EU-supported initiative uniting 53 organisations across 30 countries to advance cross-sectoral research and innovative solutions against antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The national launch event, held at Esplora Planetarium Hall, gathered leading researchers, policymakers and stakeholders to mark Malta’s commitment to collaborative action on AMR.

Through this European partnership, Xjenza Malta will support Maltese researchers and innovators to participate in transnational research projects, providing up to €500,000 per project under the first Joint Transnational Call focused on “Treatments and adherence to treatment protocols”.

Projects may explore novel combination treatments to extend antimicrobial efficacy, develop innovative tools to improve treatment adherence or assess the contribution of veterinary and agricultural antimicrobial use to AMR.

Xjenza Malta CEO Mr Silvio Scerri emphasised the agency’s commitment to strengthening Malta’s research capacity within this major EU partnership, while Prof. Michael Borg, Chair of the National Antimicrobial Resistance Committee, delivered a keynote speech outlining local and global AMR trends.

Antimicrobial resistance remains a serious global health threat, causing tens of thousands of deaths annually across Europe, with projections indicating a dramatic rise unless urgent action is taken. By joining the EUP OHAMR, Malta reinforces its commitment to innovative, science-driven public health policy and international research collaboration.

Xjenza Malta will continue to play a central role in fostering Maltese expertise and driving evidence-based solutions to safeguard public health for future generations.

“Xjenza Malta is proud to facilitate Maltese participation in international research collaborations. Together, we can develop innovative strategies that protect public health and safeguard the effectiveness of antimicrobial treatments for future generations,” Mr Silvio Scerri added.
