A brand-new therapeutic farm, Razzett l-Hena, has been officially inaugurated at San Vinċenz de Paul. This innovative project provides a relaxing space for residents, their families and visitors to unwind and interact with animals. With an investment of €700,000, this initiative forms part of a Budget measure aimed at promoting therapeutic and intergenerational activities among the elderly.

Minister for Health and Active Ageing, Jo Etienne Abela, emphasised that this space will allow residents to spend quality time with their loved ones, fostering intergenerational engagement.

He highlighted the well-documented therapeutic benefits of animals, stating that studies have shown how affection towards animals—such as hugging and petting—can help reduce stress and promote relaxation. Animal-assisted therapy can also support individuals with dementia by enhancing their ability to communicate.

“Through this €700,000 investment, we are delivering on yet another commitment to improving elderly care,” Minister Abela concluded.

Parliamentary Secretary Malcolm Paul Agius Galea underlined that this project is more than just a relaxation space; it is a concrete form of therapy that supports the mental and emotional well-being of the elderly. “By expanding therapeutic spaces, increasing community services and investing in infrastructure, we are ensuring that our elderly not only receive the best care but also continue to lead active and fulfilling lives,” he said.

Animal therapy has long been a part of care at San Vinċenz de Paul, with regular sessions led by professional animal handlers. To further strengthen this initiative, an unused area has been transformed into a farm offering a safe and welcoming environment. Elderly visitors can interact with animals such as ponies, donkeys, goats, sheep, rabbits, geese and birds, all housed in purpose-built facilities.

This initiative is designed to reduce stress, anxiety and depression while helping individuals with dementia improve communication and experience moments of reminiscence. Additionally, the farm includes a dedicated play area for children, fostering a space where families can enjoy meaningful time together.

As part of this project, renovations were also carried out on the adjacent cat café.

This initiative further reinforces the commitment to providing San Vinċenz de Paul residents with innovative services that enhance their well-being in a safe, serene environment that encourages positive community interaction.
