A distraught Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq resident has recounted the moment a rat jumped and climbed up his leg as he had just exited his residence.

Speaking with Lovin Malta, the resident recounted his shocking encounter to stress how seriously prevalent the garbage problem has become in the locality, with rats even roaming the streets in the middle of the day.

“It was last week, 26th October at roughly 1pm, when I left my home in Triq is-Sikka,” the resident recounted.

“Upon setting foot on the pavement, I looked to my left trying to remember where my car was, however, I was shocked to see this rat sprinting towards me. Within that moment, I froze, not knowing what to do.”

“It was only mere seconds that the rat happened to hit my leg numerous times, trying to get past and eventually, jumped onto me and climbed up my leg,” the resident said.

“Thankfully, it fell back to the ground and ran off into an abandoned building next door, where they’re currently seeking shelter,” the man continued. “This is an issue which I have reported to the council numerous times but no action has been taken to close this building.”

Under great shock and fear, the resident went back inside his home, and immediately called the local council to inform them about the situation.

“Their response was to take a picture of the building next door to see what action can be done, however, knowing how efficient they are, nothing will be done.”

“My partner and I fear leaving our home or entering back.”

Sharing images of the garbage left around the town’s streets, he explained how it’s left there for rats and cockroaches to feast on when it’s taken out on the pavement on the wrong collection days.

He also explained how there’s a lack of lighting within the street, another issue which has been reported many times, but no action has been taken.

Over the last few months, the garbage problem has peaked in Malta, as many localities especially situated in central Malta have reported a sharp increase in rat populations and unwanted insects.

Although many people, including politicians like Eve Borg Bonello, have spoken out on the issue and urged for a resolve, it continues to persist.
