A Year And A Half Later, Free PrEP And PEP Medication To Be Addressed In Upcoming Sexual Health Policy

A year and a half since the last promise involving free PrEP and PEP medication, the Maltese government has now said that it will addressed in the upcoming sexual health policy.

Prior to the last general election, the Labour Party included the introduction of the medication into the government’s formulary in the electoral manifesto.

However, it has been over a year since the election passed, and there have been no updates.

Malta’s sexual health policy is also extremely outdated – with the last update being more than 13 years ago – and multiple promises made since then.

Lovin Malta reached out to the Health Ministry to enquire on an update regarding the inclusion of the PrEP and PEP medication in the government formulary.

“The inclusion of PReP and PEP medication in the government formulary will be addressed in the new Sexual Health Strategy which will be published for public consultation later this year,” a representative for the ministry told Lovin Malta.

When asked for an exact date, however, no response was provided.

The last time the Health Ministry said that the free medication will be addressed in the new sexual health policy was back in December 2021 – and nothing has been done since then.

PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis and PEP stands for post-exposure prophylaxis. Prophylaxis refers to “treatment or actions taken to prevent a disease”.

PrEP is a treatment plan to prevent HIV before a person is exposed while PEP is a treatment plan for after a person is exposed.

Lovin Malta also recently enquired on the state of the sexual health policy – an update which has been promised for years – to which the ministry replied, that it will be publishing “in the coming months”.

It also outlined how Malta will see new GU Community Clinics in three different localities within the coming months; Mellieħa, Marsaxlokk, and Gozo.

Among the several promises made within the 2023 budget speech was one dedicated to the “introduction of Genitourinary (GU) Clinics in the community”
