Activists Blames State For Pit Bull Attack: Animals Across Malta Suffering Due To Ineffective Administration
Animal activists hailing from a number of local animal organisations have practically blamed Malta’s lack of effective administration for causing even more animals to suffer.
This comes after a breeder was chased out of his own house in Ta’ Xbiex in the middle of the night, suffering injuries after he was mauled by his two pit bulls.
“We are saddened by the news that another person has been injured by dogs. Dogs kept and bred by this individual have already been in the media yet under the current legislation he is allowed to keep animals in his care,” animal activists said in a statement this morning.
“This case brings up a lot of questions on the current legislation and how these dogs are kept and raised. There is no doubt that once the dogs have been caught, they will probably be put to sleep and they will have to pay with their life for the improper upbringing they have had.”
“This is because yet again the authorities have failed to protect them and other animals with effective legislation.”
Animal Activists and NGOs have been asking for legislation to control breeding and a temporary ban on the breeding of stronger breeds for years.
“Had the Minister enacted the legislation when the first case was reported in the media, yesterday’s incident would not have happened. We believe that it is unfortunate that animals across Malta are having to suffer because of an ineffective administration,” they said.
Just a couple of weeks ago, local animal NGOs also presented a list of legislation that has still not been implemented by this government, highlighting the stark inaction in the animal community.
The Commissioner for Animal Welfare, Alison Bezzina had also officially recommended in 2021 to regulate breeding and also recommended that the breeding and importation of bull breeds should be temporarily banned.
“The reason for this recommendation is to protect the breed, which due to their current abundance, keeps being abused and misunderstood.
“We cannot understand what it will take for Anton Refalo and the government to wake up from his slumber and start taking action.”
