A petition calling for a public inquiry into Jean Paul Sofia’s death has garnered almost 30,000 signatures within just one week.

Pressures continue to mount for Malta’s government, after all 40 Labour MPs unanimously voted against a motion to open a public inquiry into the 20-year-old’s untimely death.

The petition, which was launched by Sofia’s mother Isabelle Bonnici, first surfaced on 7th July, shortly after a debate was held in Parliament on whether a public inquiry should be opened.

During the time of writing, over 27,000 signatures have been registered – and the numbers keep climbing, with thousands registered every single day.

On Monday, a vigil is set to be held in Valletta in memory of Jean Paul Sofia, with thousands already registering their interest in attending. Attendees are being urged to bring a candle.

The petition can be found and signed here.

JeanPaul Sofia was 20-years-old when he was found dead and buried in the rubble, following the collapse of a building on a construction site near Kordin. Since then, calls for justice have not ceased.

Since then, the government has expressed serious resistance at the idea of opening a public inquiry, even though many professionals and lawyers, have stressed that this is necessary in this case.
