Amid Scorching Temperatures And Cross-Winds, Malta’s Archery Team Claim Gold In Italy
Maltese archers triumphed despite having to face scorching temperatures and cross-winds while competing in a tournament in Italy.
National archer Michelle Abela soared to the top of the podium after amassing 1164 points in the Recurve Women’s category. In doing so, she placed first on both days of the tournament.
Another major success was seen in the Compound Men’s team, comprised of the trio that was Daniel Schembri, Brian Micallef and Karl Cutajar. Together they tallied a total of 1911 points on the first day and 1867 points on the second. Scores that also saw them rise to the top spot.
Kevin Bonnici, who competed in the Recurve Men’s category, also bagged a respectable 1072 points, placing fifth in his respective set.
The first round, held on 25th June, consisted of 72 arrows on 70 meters for the Recurve archers and 72 arrows on 50 meters (with a smaller target) for the Compound archers. However, all competitors were faced with some nagging weather conditions.
Between scorching temperatures and difficult cross-winds, finding the target presented some difficulty. Nevertheless, the Maltese team was more than able to rise to the challenge.
The competition followed a two-day training camp held in the facility’s state-of-the-art training center. The camp – as well as the competition – welcomed around 120 archers of different categories from all around Italy.
Team Malta was led by national coach John Schembri.
