Education Minister Clifton Grima has spoken out following the arraignment of Francine Farrugia, an MCAST payroll officer who was charged in court with embezzling €2.3 million in public funds.

“I would like to express my anger and also my disappointment at these facts which are now public,” he said in a statement.

“At the same time I also show my appreciation for the joint work carried out between the Police Force, the MCAST administration and everyone who worked to ensure a speedy and efficient process,” he continued.

Farrugia has since resigned from her position as a Siġġiewi local councillor and all roles within the Nationalist Party, after police revealed she had allegedly issued double salaries and transferred the funds to her personal accounts, using the money to buy property, luxury items, and vehicles.

Grima confirmed that MCAST will “continue with its work in favour of students, while ensuring that it continues to safeguard the principles of governance, accountability and transparency.”

“Measures have already been taken in this regard while the work at the college must continue for the good of our educational community.”
