Apotheosis: Artist Explores The Divinisation Of Human Beings In New Valletta Exhibition

Darren Tanti, a local artist typically known for his hyperrealist paintings, has just launched his latest body of work exploring the divinisation of the human being, titled “Apotheosis”.

In the latest project curated by Melanie Erixon, which is being exhibited in collaboration with the Valletta Cultural Agency and the Jesuit Church Foundation, the artist is readdressing this theme through a contemporary perspective.

Using a mix of contemporary forms of art and traditional aesthetic languages, the artist presents a hybrid body of work that addresses the current state of humankind and its ultimate call; holiness.

As history clearly shows, the journey towards apotheosis is riddled with all sorts of obstacles and malaises; some of which are unexpected whereas others are totally self-inflicted.

The exploitation of earth resources, unequal distribution of wealth around the globe, war, hunger, and abuse of power are amongst the self-inflicted causes that shackle our journey towards ultimate serenity.

In a metaphoric and symbolic way, the artist addresses such themes within the sacred context of the Jesuit church complex.

While respecting the sacred nature of the space, the artist asks the audience to reflect on these issues and meditate on the prospects of following the aspiration we are all called upon, to transcend our human nature and become holy.

This exhibition shows a new path in Tanti’s oeuvre.  Very renowned for hyperrealist painting, Tanti here continues to delve further into what he started in his last major exhibition Inaction is a Weapon of Mass Destruction (2022), where he exhibited sculptures for the first time.

The artist goes a step further and one can observe a complete move away from the 2D painting.

The artworks presented here are mostly sculptures and objet d’art incorporating less traditional aspects like neon tubes and perspex which can be perceived as standalone installations making up one coherent exhibition.

This results in an unconventional body of work that though contemporary in its intent, its embodiment is a mixture of traditional religious art with hints of Pop elements.

The exhibition is available for viewing until 9th January at the Oratories at the Jesuit Church in Valletta.
