Bernard Grech Declares ‘War On Drugs’ After 200kg Of Cannabis Stolen From Army Base

Nationalist Party leader Bernard Grech has vowed to lead a “war on drugs” following the theft of 200kg of confiscated cannabis from an Armed Forces of Malta-controlled site.
“I will be at the forefront of the war on drugs alongside the Nationalist Party and the people,” Grech said earlier today, calling for accountability over the incident.
The drugs, seized last year, were stolen from a container at the AFM base in Safi early on Sunday morning. They had been held there pending destruction on court orders. The heist has raised serious questions about security measures at sites storing illegal substances.
Just a few moments ago, Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri announced that arrests have been made in connection with the drug heist.
Grech reiterated the PN’s demand for Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri’s resignation, arguing that his offer to step down was the right move in light of the situation.
However, Prime Minister Robert Abela has refused to accept it, stating on Sunday that Camilleri was not involved in drug storage arrangements or decisions regarding their destruction.
With the prime minister backing his minister, Grech said Abela must now take full responsibility for the consequences of the heist.
“If no one takes responsibility for this, everything will carry on as if nothing happened, even though this theft means that the country is not functioning,” Grech warned.
He also criticised the government for blocking a parliamentary debate on the matter, saying this showed Abela was standing on the side of criminals.
“200kg more drugs are on the streets today, in the hands of traffickers and pushers who are selling it to our young people. Parents, mothers, fathers, and grandmothers are worried because our children face more danger,” Grech said.
He also insisted that the administrative inquiry into how the heist happened should be led by the Ombudsman to ensure an independent and transparent investigation.
