The popularity of bus travel in Malta continues to surge as new data has revealed that over 5.4 million passengers used buses during March 2023.

This represents a significant increase of 20% compared to February 2023, a 50.3% rise when compared to March 2022, and an 18.2% jump compared to March 2019.

The convenience of the Tallinja Card, a contactless payment card for public transport, may be one of the factors contributing to this growth.

Over 4.5 million passengers used their Tallinja Card to travel in March 2023, marking a 20% increase as compared to February 2023, a 64.4% increase compared to March 2022, and a 35.7% increase compared to the same month in 2019.

Registrations for the Tallinja Card also saw a sustained upward trend, with an 11% increase in registrations in March 2023 as compared to February 2023, and a whopping 112% increase when compared to March 2022.

As Malta’s public transport network continues to expand and develop, further growth in bus usage is expected, effectively reducing congestion on the roads.
