Tributes are pouring in for 59-year-old Dione Galdes who passed away earlier today after he succumbed to his injuries from a diving accident on Sunday.

“Dione was not only a skilled diving instructor but also a trusted mentor, a generous advisor, and a true companion to all who had the privilege of knowing him,” said Andrew P Zammit, chairman of Calypso Subaqua Club in a Facebook tribute.

The tragedy happened on Sunday at around 9am in Ċirkewwa as Galdes found difficulty during one of his diving trips. Galdes was carried out of the sea, and was given medical assistance by people at the bay where he was diving. Shortly afterwards, he was taken to Mater Dei Hospital where he died two days later.

Dione was known for mentoring many divers in Malta. His calm and approachable nature along with his passion for diving, made him the perfect diving instructor, as he shared this passion with all who met him.

“Many of us took our first underwater breaths under his care, and countless divers carry a part of his legacy in their training and love for the sport. His absence leaves a deep void in our community, but his spirit, his laughter, and his wisdom will remain with us always,” wrote Zammit.

Magistrate Ian Farrugia is leading an investigation.
