The Żurrieq Parish Church, a historic gem, is currently undergoing restoration work on its interior ceiling paintings. Thanks to the generous funding from Arts Council Malta, this project aims to revive the artistic beauty of the church and preserve its rich historical significance.

The decision to restore the interior ceiling paintings was prompted by the severe deterioration of the artworks above the altar. These paintings had suffered extensive damage over the years, necessitating a direct intervention to ensure preservation for future generations.

Minister for National Heritage Owen Bonnici expressed his commitment to safeguarding Malta’s religious patrimony and highlighted the importance of this restoration work in complementing the existing artistic treasures within the Żurrieq Parish Church.

This endeavour joins a series of interventions carried out in churches and chapels across the country, demonstrating the government’s dedication to preserving Malta’s cultural heritage.

Leading the restoration efforts is architect Daniel Darmanin, who explained that a temporary roof structure has been erected to facilitate access to the ceiling while ensuring that the church space remains usable during the restoration process.

This temporary roof allows for a thorough examination of the existing damages and enables necessary interventions before the painting work commences.

Renowned artist Manuel Farrugia has been entrusted with the task of breathing new life into the ceiling paintings of the Church. His expertise and artistic vision will ensure the faithful restoration of these historical artworks, restoring their original splendour.

The Żurrieq Parish Church holds a significant place in Maltese history. Originally constructed in the 17th century, it has witnessed the passage of time and played a vital role in the spiritual and communal life of the local residents. Its architectural beauty and religious importance have made it a cherished landmark in Żurrieq and a testament to the island’s cultural identity.

The ongoing restoration of the interior ceiling paintings not only revitalises the artistic legacy  but also pays homage to the historical significance it holds within the community. With the combined efforts of dedicated professionals, the support of Arts Council Malta, and the local community, this restoration project ensures that the Żurrieq Parish Church will continue to inspire and captivate generations to come.
