Foreign Minister Ian Borg has posted a sobering statement accompanied by a picture of him with his young daughter stating that children should be at school, not searching for their mothers buried in the rubble of war.

“This morning, children should be at school not searching for their mothers buried in wars,” Borg wrote.

“Malta’s name is all over the global news with what we did last night. Congratulations to our Foreign Affairs team,” he said, referring to the UN Security Council resolution drafted by Malta and approved by the permanent and temporary members.

According to the resolution, the Council demands “for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups, especially children, as well as ensuring immediate humanitarian access”.

The resolution also appeals for the evacuation of the injured and urges all parties to refrain from depriving people in Gaza of basic services.

The resolution was voted on with 12 countries being in favour and three abstaining which were Russia, the UK, and the US.

This marks the first resolution concerning the ongoing conflict to be passed by the UN Security Council, following four unsuccessful attempts.
