Watch: Court Rules In Favour Of Repubblika – Pilatus Bank Inaction Case Should Be Heard In Public
Repubblika has just won a legal battle against the government, the Attorney General (AG), and the State Advocate (SA).
The Court of Appeals has confirmed that the judicial review of the state’s decision not to prosecute senior officials at Pilatus Bank should be held in public.
This decision was already taken by the court back in June 2023, but the State Advocate and AG appealed the decision.
“A victory for democracy, for transparency, for citizens to know what is happening to hold the institutions accountable,” Repubblika president Robert Aquilina said in a press conference this morning.
Aquilina stated that the State Advocate and Attorney General lied in their claim that the case must be held behind closed doors. They argued that Malta is bound by international treaties and international arbitration rules, however it is not.
He further stated that the local officials worked against the interests of Malta and its “honest citizens”.
“They helped criminals cover up the atrocities they committed, they wasted precious months. Now the truth is written in black on white and no one can erase it.”
He stated that the SA and AG wasted months by appealing this sentence.
Aquilina went on to say that the SA and AG had argued that police investigations into the matter are still ongoing, however, he said, the court was doubtful of this.
“I address the AG directly: You were caught trying to deceive, helping the criminals, hiding your tracks, trying to cover up the atrocities committed by criminals who tarnished the name of our country.”
“Change course. Do not remain on the side of criminals, come to the side of honest citizens, come to the side of justice.”
Repubblika was assisted by Lawyer Jason Azzopardi.
Do you think the Court of Appeals made the right decision?
