The Archdiocese of Malta has asked the public for sympathy following the circulation of footage of a priest’s outburst during his mass.

“While the Archdiocese takes incidents of verbal and other abuse extremely seriously, given all the circumstances of the case it kindly asks for the public’s understanding, and appeals for empathy and sensitivity for all concerned with respect to comments made on social media,” the Curia wrote on Facebook.

A video currently doing the rounds on local social media shows a priest seemingly fed up with the fact that churchgoers were not singing during the liturgy.

During the highly emotional moment, he said that in his mass, he was the “president” and he invited anyone who wanted to complain about him to do so directly to his face.

He ended his rant by saying “Għax Ġbajt” a popular Maltese saying for “I’ve had enough”.

As a response, the Curia jumped in and asked the public to show sympathy for the man who seemed to be struggling.

“The Archdiocese expresses regret for the unfortunate incident concerning one of its priests at the Żurrieq parish recently and is working closely with all concerned to address the situation. The Archdiocese’s priority is the wellbeing of the priest and the community.”
