Thanks to €2.1 million in EU funding through the Internal Security Fund, the Forensic Science Laboratory of the Malta Police Force has been upgraded. This upgrade includes the implementation of an advanced Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS).

This investment has facilitated the provision of new fingerprint livescan technology to 10 police stations across Malta and Gozo.

Police officers underwent specialised training to ensure efficient utilisation of the equipment. They are now able to employ the advanced technology, which will aid in swifter and more accurate identification and comparison of fingerprints.

AFIS is a biometric solution consisting of a computer database of fingerprint records, which is able to search and compare to identify known or unknown fingerprints.

The system is able to search the database for a complete or partial fingerprint and return matching candidates.

Do you think this will make for more efficient apprehending and recording of criminals?
